When you go in for a surgery you expect the doctors to know what they are doing. There should be no question in your mind about the procedure being performed.
Unfortunately, surgeries don’t always go according to plan. If you wake up from a procedure only to discover that the doctors have made a mistake, you could face life-altering injuries, the possibility of additional surgery and huge medical bills.
Common surgeon mistakes
Wrong-site, wrong-procedure and wrong-patient surgeries are among the most common made by medical professionals. Each of these is terrifying in its own right:
- Wrong-site procedures happen when the surgery is performed on the wrong part of the body. This may mean the doctor performed a procedure on the right body part, but on the wrong side of the body. Or they may have performed the procedure on the incorrect body part all together.
- Wrong procedures are ones where the doctors perform the incorrect surgery. This could mean you went in for one type of procedure, and were treated for something completely different.
- Wrong patient procedures means professionals performed the procedure on the wrong patient. Mixing up patients with similar last names is an example of this.
Devastating consequences
Mistakes made, even on seemingly minor surgeries, can lead to serious injuries and complications. If the wrong procedure is performed, you may have a healthy organ removed. Or you may not get the care you need to improve your condition or even save your life.
With so much at stake, surgeons need to be held responsible for their mistakes. If they were negligent in their care, you deserve compensation.
