If you think you know about the latest safety features in 2016 model year vehicles, you are arguably way ahead of the average consumer who is looking for a new car. According to a recent survey, a large majority of consumers are not familiar with safety features that could save their lives.
For instance, generations of drivers understand what cruise control is. However, a majority of drivers are unfamiliar with adaptive cruise control, which can adjust a car’s speed based on traffic conditions and inclement weather. Moreover, they may not know about the benefits of lane integrity systems or blind spot warning systems; both of which help drivers avoid collisions.
Further complicating things, automakers may have different commercial names for the same systems. For instance, the adaptive cruise control module on Mercedes-Benz vehicles is named Distronic Plus, while Subaru’s offering is called EyeSight Plus. Of course, neither name has any semblance to adaptive cruise control, so car buyers are not likely to know what they are.
