What are some signs of birth injuries?

On Behalf of | Aug 3, 2015 | Birth Injuries

Everyone hopes the birth of their child will be a happy occasion, which it likely will be if all goes according to plan. Unfortunately, on occasion there are problems with the delivery in which an infant suffers some kind of injury.

It can, at times, be difficult to know if a baby suffered an injury during the birthing process. This is because an injured infant may not behave that much differently from a healthy infant. So what symptoms may indicate a baby has been injured?

There are a number of symptoms an injured baby may exhibit immediately after the birth. Some injuries may seem minor, but could lead to serious issues later in the baby’s life. Obvious symptoms include bruises and cuts. More subtle signs of injury may include vomiting, having a very pale or blue skin tone and labored breathing.

As a baby gets older, an injury could manifest itself in other ways. For example, the child’s physical growth or ability to gain weight may be poor. The child may not learn to crawl or sit up within a normal time frame. Speech problems may also be indicative of a birth injury.

Birth injuries can happen for any number of reasons. For instance, a doctor may fail to recognize the baby was not receiving enough oxygen during the delivery. Likewise, a nurse could make an error administering medication. If your baby exhibits signs of having been injured it is very important that he or she be examined and closely monitored.

If you suspect your baby was injured due to the negligence of a medical professional, you may want to have the matter looked into by an experienced medical malpractice attorney. If negligence can be demonstrated, you may be able to receive compensation to help defray the medical expenses attributable to the injury.
