LASIK surgery may prove risky for some people

On Behalf of Harris, Powers & Cunningham PLLC | May 21, 2015 | Surgical Errors

Those among us blessed with sight know just how important the ability to see is in our daily lives. In fact, our vision plays a part in almost everything we do. As such, having clear vision is highly desirable. Often glasses or contact lenses can satisfactorily correct any problems we have with our eyesight.

But another option is LASIK surgery. This outpatient eye surgery is typically used to treat myopia, also known as nearsightedness. The surgery involves the use of lasers.

While LASIK treatment may help some people, others might be better off steering clear of the procedure. Here are some reasons LASIK surgery may not be right for you:

  • If you are active in such sports as martial arts or boxing that involve frequent strikes to the eyes and face.
  • If you are taking medications, such as retinoic acid, or have a disease, such as diabetes, that could have an impact on wound healing.
  • You are averse to taking the risk. No long-term data exists for current LASIK procedures.

Any form of surgery could hold the risk of surgical errors and LASIK surgery is no exception. By carrying out a thorough medical screening, a doctor can determine if it is safe for a patient to have the surgery.

Patients can be injured due to the improper actions of a doctor. In the case of LASIK surgery, an error could cause serious damage to a patient’s vision. If the procedure leaves a patient in a worsened condition, he or she may be able to file a medical malpractice suit.

Should you ever suffer an injury during a surgical procedure, an Arizona personal injury attorney may be able to help you decide on a course of legal action.
