Impaired driving accidents in Arizona

Recent statistics continue to suggest that alcohol use can drastically increase a driver's risk of becoming involved in a car accident. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation's 2013 statistics, there are 107,348 car accidents a year in Arizona. Of those accidents, 777 of them result in a fatality and 34,047 results in an injury. Alcohol impaired accidents account for about 10 percent of those accidents and 32 percent of the fatalities.

On Jan. 15 at around 6 p.m., an accident on Interstate 17 involving five vehicles resulted in two injuries and limited the flow of traffic to just one lane. Are trucks more dangerous than other vehicles?

Truck accidents in Arizona can be extremely dangerous. According to the NHTSA, although commercial trucking companies are legally required to adhere to certain safety standards, these are not necessarily enforced in all circumstances. Moreover, since trucks tend to be much larger than other vehicles, they may potentially be more deadly in the event of an accident.

The causes and effects of whiplash injuries

A whiplash is a common car accident injury that occurs when the head and neck are moved suddenly in one direction and then another. The name comes from the whip-like motion, and the sudden movement creates both a sprain and a strain in the neck. The injury can be painful for a prolonged of time and has a wide range of severity. Many drivers pass off whiplash as a common and minor injury, but it is important for Arizona residents to understand how serious it can be.

Illegal, legal drugs can impair driving skills

Arizona motorists who drive after taking or using drugs may face the same consequences as if they had driven after drinking. A drug is any substance that alters a person's mind. Most people may think of illicit drugs, such as marijuana or cocaine, when the term 'drugged driving" is used, but it also refers to prescription and over-the-counter drugs that impact how a person functions.

Injuries that could be avoided in Arizona car crashes

In car accidents, there are several types of injuries that could be avoided if proper precautions are taken. For instance, it may be possible to reduce the number of brain injuries that occur by driving or riding in a car with proper front and side airbags. While some believe that airbags may be harmful, their benefits generally outweigh the risks.

Assessing skull fracture injuries

People living in Arizona might find it helpful to understand more about how skull fractures are diagnosed and treated. These types of injuries may occur in a car crash or any other incident that involves a forceful blow to the skull. Physicians may be able to identify a skull fracture injury by conducting a physical examination, but a comprehensive diagnosis may require the use of more sophisticated tools.

The facts about driving while impaired

Arizona residents may not be aware of the facts about impaired driving in the United States. The problem is big; in 2012, 10,322 individuals were fatally wounded in alcohol-related impaired driving accidents. That number accounts for almost 31 percent of all traffic-related fatalities nationwide. Impaired driving accidents in 2012 accounted for 20 percent of traffic-related fatalities among children ages zero to fourteen.

Use of roundabouts to reduce serious injuries and fatalities

Arizona drivers may have noticed that the state is installing more and more roundabouts at intersections, doing away with the traffic signals that used to govern the directional flow of traffic through the intersections. While many people may find roundabouts annoying, the state has good reason to utilize them more and more while phasing out the four-way stop and signal-controlled intersections.
