Certain circumstances could make forceps delivery an option

An expectant mother can have many worries leading up to the birth of her child. Of paramount concern is the baby’s health. Hopefully, when the time arrives, the infant will be delivered without complications. Modern medical equipment and procedures help to ensure that should an issue arise, both mother and child can receive the treatment they need for an ultimately successful birth.

For the procedure to be as safe as possible, it takes well trained and alert professionals to make the correct decisions during every step of the birthing process. In order to minimize the risk of birth injuries, doctors and their medical team must properly respond to any problems that arise.

There are certain complications that can occur which may motivate a doctor to recommend a forceps delivery. Forceps are a tongs-like instrument that can be used as a means of aiding in the extraction of the baby from the birth canal. The forceps are used to grasp the baby’s head in order to induce movement. This option may be recommended due to the following circumstances:

  • If the head of your baby is facing up instead of down.
  • If your baby’s heart beat changes in such a way that the doctor believes that the delivery must happen immediately.
  • If labor has stalled in spite of your efforts at pushing.
  • If you have a medical condition that limits how long you can safely be in labor.

Your consent should be requested prior to having a forceps delivery and the doctor should be capable of performing the procedure safely. Negligent use of forceps can lead to a number of different injuries. These can include brain injuries, skull fractures and bleeding inside the skull.

If your baby has come to harm due to a doctor or other health care provider improperly employing forceps during the birthing process, it may be beneficial for you to consult with an Arizona medical malpractice attorney. The attorney could perform an investigation regarding your procedure and help you determine a level of recompense to help cover the costs of your child’s future needs.
