Medical malpractice suit filed for unnecessary procedures

When a medical expert or practitioner tells a resident of Phoenix, Arizona, that a procedure is warranted, most patients will see no reason to distrust the doctor or specialist. Although some people might ask for a second opinion, many individuals undergo surgeries based on the recommendation of a single physician, especially when pain is a consideration. However, second opinions might be a good idea, as around 300 patients in another state have now brought claims against a hospital's cardiac unit due to what the suit is claiming were unnecessary procedures.

According to the medical malpractice suit, the plaintiffs claim that doctors at the facility performed heart stenting that was not necessary for treatment. The procedures apparently left patients fearful of doctors. Plaintiffs are also claiming emotional and physical pain associated with the procedures.

The plaintiffs' attorney told a reporter that some of the plaintiffs sought a third-party review of their case by an unbiased doctor after the fact. That doctor said the procedures were not warranted. The attorney also stated that he believes the hospital is using unnecessary procedures to increase revenues. The hospital bills Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies for the procedures.

The hospital didn't comment directly regarding the lawsuit. It did say that it deals with medical malpractice cases as necessary, but that it stands behind its cardiac department. According to a statement issued by the facility, the cardiac center has been cited in the past for quality outcomes and excellent patient care.

Doctors can make mistakes, and there are cases where unnecessary procedures and tests are ordered in an attempt to be thorough or cautious. Other times, such procedures may be conducted to increase financial bottom lines. Regardless of the reason, if patients suffer because of unnecessary tests, they may have a case for a compensation claim.
